Common Reasons Your Furnace Won’t Stay On

No one wants to risk struggling through the winter with a faulty furnace. Heating system issues can quickly impact your well-being and daily routine, making it impossible to feel comfortable during the coldest days of the year. Here are a few of the most common reasons your furnace may not stay on.

Faulty Thermostat

Older thermostats often have trouble reading the temperature in your home. If your thermostat is broken or outdated, it may be telling your furnace to turn off before your home has fully warmed up. The best option may be to replace your thermostat with an updated model.

Dirty Heat Sensor

Natural gas furnaces have a heat sensor installed next to the pilot light. This component helps your heating system identify when it should turn off the gas supply. However, if the sensor loses the ability to sense heat from the pilot, it may prematurely close the gas valve. Check to see if your pilot light is staying on. Regular maintenance is the most effective way to ensure all components of your furnace are functioning correctly.

Broken Blower Motor

Your furnace’s blower moves the hot air out of the heating system and through the ducts. If the blower motor fails, an unsafe amount of heat can collect in your furnace. The system will then shut down to prevent damaging the heat exchanger. An HVAC technician can determine why your blower motor has stopped working and fix it.
