Are Portable Air Conditioners An Efficient Solution For Small Spaces?

Portable air conditioners are great for cooling small areas like attics, bedrooms, and offices. They can be moved anywhere as long as there is a window that opens to let out the exhaust (heat). The appeal of these units is that they are cost-effective, easy to install, and require little maintenance.

What Is a Portable AC?

A portable air conditioner is a self-contained unit that is capable of being used in any space without needing modifications. The unit is equipped with wheels, making it easy to move from room to room, and all it needs is a wall outlet for power and a window opening for expelling the heat. Because of their size and ability to fit in small spaces, they are great for dorm rooms, small apartments, and RVs.

Parts of a portable AC include the:

  • Fan
  • Compressor
  • Evaporator coil
  • Condenser coil
  • Refrigerant

How Do Portable Air Conditioners Work?

The job of any air conditioner is to remove the heat and humidity from the room and replace it with cooler air. Since the portable unit has the same parts as a traditional air conditioner, it works pretty much the same way.

It draws in the warm air and passes it through the condenser coils, where it is then chilled by the refrigerant as it is evaporated by the coil and becomes a gas that is pushed through the system. Cool air is pushed out through the vent, and the warm air and moisture from the room are removed through the exhaust hose leading outside.

Types of Portable Air Conditioners

There are two types of portable AC units: single hose and dual hose. The single-hose model is the most common type on the market because it is cheaper and easier to install. However, the dual-hose unit is more efficient at cooling because it draws in fresh air from outside through one hose and releases it through the second hose.
